Leptospirosis
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can affect dogs (and humans) which is often spread by rodents.
Where can my dog pick Leptospirosis up?
Leptospirosis is spread by rodent urine. Exposure to contaminated water and soil are risk factors for contracting leptospirosis.
Can I catch Leptospirosis from my dog?
Yes. When dogs are infected with leptospirosis they shed the bacteria in their urine and if humans come into contact with the urine they can become infected.
How can I protect my pet against Leptospirosis?
You can protect your dog by vaccinating them against leptospirosis. This will prevent any infection in your dog.
In Cairns this is a recommended vaccine that is usually administered with their other yearly vaccinations.
How many vaccines are required?
The initial leptospirosis course is 2 vaccines 4 weeks apart (started at the second vaccinations for puppies). This is then followed by a yearly booster.
If your dog has missed a year or more of leptospirosis vaccinations your veterinarian may suggest starting the course again.
